Rain-fed streams dilute inorganic nutrients but subsidise organic-matter-associated nutrients in coastal waters of the northeast Pacific Ocean

چکیده

Abstract. In coastal regions, rivers and streams may be important sources of nutrients limiting to primary production in marine waters; however, sampling is still rarely conducted across the land-to-ocean aquatic continuum, precluding conclusions from being drawn about connectivity between freshwater systems. Here we use a more-than-4-year dataset (2014–2018) (nitrogen, phosphorus, silica, iron) dissolved organic carbon spanning draining watersheds nearshore surface waters along Central Coast British Columbia, Canada, at heart North Pacific temperate rainforest region. Mean N:Si:P ratios were 5:20:1 (P:Fe = 1:67) 6:11:1, respectively, showing relative consistency land–ocean interface but deviation extended Redfield ratio. Inorganic nutrient concentrations (NO3-+NO2-, PO43-, Si(OH)4) fresh less than receiving environment, indicating that inputs this region little importance – or even diluted pool readily available inorganic waters. Conversely, increased organic-matter-associated nutrients, namely nitrogen iron. The organic-matter-rich landscapes yielded globally significant quantities (304–381 kg km?2 yr?1) iron (463–596 yr?1), thus acting as potentially both offshore These exports subsidise heterotrophic microbial communities capable directly consuming remineralising these compensating for dilution by inputs. We highlight need better understand limitation concerted research efforts study spatial temporal dynamism northeast coast.

Nutrients and Dissolved Organic Matter in the Altamaha River and Loading to the Coastal Zone

Ammonium (NH4 ), nitrate+nitrite (NOx), dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) and dissolved organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus (DOC, DON and DOP) were measured in the Altamaha River and several tributaries during a two year period from September 2000 through September 2002. Temporal variations in concentration as well as nutrient and dissolved organic matter loading from the Altamaha to the...

Trace Metals, Organic Carbon, and Inorganic Nutrients in Surface Waters of the Long Island Sound: Sources, Cycling and Effects

This study provides an extensive dataset of dissolved trace metals (silver, cadmium, copper, nickel, lead, iron, and zinc), inorganic (ammonia, nitrate, phosphate and silicates), and organic (urea, dissolved organic nitrogen, carbon and phosphorous, as well as particulate carbon and nitrogen) constituents during high and low riverine flow conditions in surface waters of the Long Island Sound. A...

Distribution of Nutrients in the Coastal Waters of the Bay of Bengal

to18 th Febrauary 2013 in the coastal waters of the Bay of Bengal. Marked variations observed with respect to almost all nutrients determined. The detectable ranges of ammonium, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate and silicate were 0.026-23.52, 0.018-0.41, 0.026-4.46, 0.18-7 and 0.37-20.31μM respectively. The higher concentrations of nutrients were observed on 15 th February 2013. Among these five nutr...

East-West Distribution of Nutrients and Dissolved Inorganic Carbon in the Northern North Pacific in Autumn

We measured nutrient and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentrations from west to east across the northern North Pacific Ocean from station K2 to Ocean Station Papa during September and October 2005. At 2000 m depth, silicate levels increased and dissolved oxygen levels decreased from west to east. This trend was attributed to seawater in the layer flowing from west to east in the northern ...

Availability of iron and major nutrients for phytoplankton in the northeast Atlantic Ocean

Because of recent findings that Fe is a limiting factor for phytoplankton activity even at relatively high dissolved iron (DFe) concentrations, the potential importance of Fe limitation was revisited in the northeast Atlantic Ocean (39–458N, 17–218W). We report data gathered during deck incubation experiments performed at three stations in February–March 2001 with surface seawater containing DF...
